Grandmaster Pravin Thipsay is a legendary figure in Indian chess, recognized for his immense contributions both as a player and as a mentor. A household name in the chess world, GM Thipsay was the third Grandmaster from India, following in the footsteps of the great Viswanathan Anand and Dibyendu Barua. His extraordinary career, spanning over two decades, has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Arjuna Award. Today, he continues to share his knowledge and experience as a mentor, guiding future generations of chess champions.

Journey and Achievements

GM Pravin Thipsay’s chess career took off in the 1980s, a time when Indian chess was still developing on the world stage. He quickly rose to prominence and became a force to be reckoned with, dominating the national and international chess scenes. Thipsay’s list of accomplishments is extensive:

  • Seven-time National Chess Champion: GM Thipsay’s dominance in Indian chess is highlighted by his remarkable feat of winning the national championship seven times, a testament to his consistency and mastery of the game.

  • Representing India on the Global Stage (1975-2003): For over 25 years, GM Thipsay represented India in various international events, including several Chess Olympiads, playing alongside the best in the world and contributing to India’s growing reputation in chess.

  • FIDE Senior Trainer: Beyond his achievements as a player, GM Thipsay is a highly respected chess trainer. His expertise and experience as a FIDE Senior Trainer have allowed him to mentor some of India’s finest chess talents.

  • Chairman of the All India Chess Federation’s Trainers’ Commission (2021): His leadership and vision for chess training in India have earned him the role of Chairman of the Trainers’ Commission, where he helps shape the future of chess education in the country.

Mentorship and Notable Students

Throughout his career, GM Pravin Thipsay has trained and mentored numerous chess prodigies, guiding them to achieve greatness. Some of his most notable students include:

  • GM M.R. Lalith Babu (2008-2012): One of India’s leading chess players, Lalith Babu has credited much of his early success to Thipsay’s mentorship.

  • GM S.L. Narayanan (2013-2015): Another top Indian Grandmaster who honed his skills under Thipsay’s guidance.

  • GM Ankit Rajpara (2012-2015) and GM Anurag Mhamal (2010-2012): Both players achieved Grandmaster status while training with Thipsay, benefiting from his deep insights into the game.

  • WGM & IM Nisha Mohota (since 2006): One of India’s strongest female chess players, Mohota continues to work with Thipsay to sharpen her skills.

  • WGM Kruttika Nadig (2004-2008) and IM Aditya Udeshi (2008-2012): Both students have flourished under Thipsay’s mentorship, earning titles and accolades in their respective careers.
